How to choose the right paver for your driveway in Belgium?

February 10, 2026 · 6 min read

Why is material choice so important?

The access driveway is one of the first elements people notice. Beyond aesthetics, the material determines durability, maintenance and property value. In Walloon Brabant, with wet winters, freeze-thaw cycles and varied soils (loam in Wavre, clay in Chaumont-Gistoux, sand in La Hulpe), careful thought is required before laying the first paver.

RENODAY has been installing driveways across the region for many years. Here is our practical guide to making the right choice.

Natural granite setts: elegance and longevity

Granite setts are the durability benchmark. Resistant to frost, UV and heavy loads, they suit garage entrances and driveable driveways perfectly. Natural appearance ages well and fits all architectural styles.

Maintenance is simple: a jet wash is enough. Joints need redoing every 10 to 15 years depending on climate. Purchase cost is higher, but quality/longevity ratio is unbeatable.

  • Lifespan: 30 to 50 years minimum
  • Frost resistance: excellent
  • Maintenance: very low
  • Style: classic, contemporary, rustic
  • Recommended for: driveable entrances, large driveways

Concrete pavers: versatility and controlled budget

Concrete pavers are the most common choice in Belgium for residential driveways. Available in many colours, shapes and finishes, they are much cheaper than granite.

Main limits are gradual fading and slightly lower frost resistance if poorly installed. With careful laying and adapted foundations — as we do at RENODAY — they remain an excellent choice for most budgets.

  • Lifespan: 15 to 25 years
  • Frost resistance: good if well laid
  • Maintenance: low to moderate
  • Style: modern, contemporary
  • Recommended for: standard residential driveways

Flemish bluestone and natural stone: local charm

Ochre Flemish bluestone or Belgian limestone bring authentic character, highly valued in heritage municipalities like Grez-Doiceau or Court-Saint-Étienne. These natural materials blend perfectly into the local landscape.

They need more regular maintenance (sealing, moss removal) and cost more, but the final result is incomparable. Ideal for renovating character buildings.

Our advice: think about your soil first

Choose material after analysing your soil type. Clay soil like Chaumont-Gistoux or Huldenberg needs thicker foundations against subsidence. Sandy soil like La Hulpe or Hoeilaart is more stable but compacts differently.

At RENODAY we systematically evaluate the site before advising. Our goal: a driveway that holds perfectly for decades without excessive maintenance. Request your free quote and we guide you step by step.
