5 tips for an immaculate garden all year in Belgium
March 4, 2026 · 5 min read
Why regular maintenance makes all the difference
In Belgium, humid climate and marked seasonal changes test your garden. Without regular care, moss, fast hedge growth and leaf build-up can strip aesthetic value in weeks.
With an adapted maintenance schedule, an immaculate garden twelve months a year is entirely achievable, even in Walloon Brabant. Here are the five rules we apply at RENODAY.
1. Adapt mowing to the season
Mowing is not uniform all year. In spring growth is explosive: mow once or twice a week. In summer reduce frequency but raise the cutting height against drought. In autumn a final low cut prepares the lawn for winter.
Result: homogeneous, dense, resilient turf with less weed and moss.
2. Treat the soil, not just the plants
Loamy or clay soils in Walloon Brabant tend to compact over time. Annual aeration (scarification + aeration) is essential for healthy turf. Add compost or nitrogen fertiliser in March and September.
For very clay gardens — common in Chaumont-Gistoux, Huldenberg or Chastre — we also advise shallow drainage against winter waterlogging.
3. Trim hedges at the right times
In Belgium hedge trimming is regulated to protect nesting birds: trimming between 1 April and 31 July is prohibited. Late August/early September suits finishing cuts; November–March for structural pruning.
Well-timed trimming produces denser, more even hedges, privacy and shelter for local wildlife.
4. Anticipate autumn
Dead leaves left too long on turf suffocate the lawn and encourage fungi. Regular collection in October–November is essential. It is also the time to plant spring bulbs and prepare borders for winter.
- Leaf collection: October–November
- Bulb planting: September–October
- Protect fragile plants: November
- Final mow: November before frost
- Fungicide treatment: if moss or fungi detected
5. Entrust maintenance to a local professional
Local site knowledge makes the difference. A landscaper who works regularly in Wavre, Rixensart or Waterloo knows soil specifics, microclimate and suitable plant species.
At RENODAY we offer personalised annual contracts that free you from all garden constraints. One visit, one quote, and your garden is in good hands for the whole season.
